Jekabs Apinis (1899-1945)
Jekabs Apinis is one of the most prominent students of Vilhelm Purvitis. Inspiration he gained direct from nature observation, reflecting it in realistic - impressionistic manner. In his works dominate rural landscapes with rye harvest and stacks, snowy winter evenings and autumn days. The presence of human in nature could be seen just indirectly. J.Apinis specially focused on illustration of Vidzeme's and Riga's seashore dune and pine trees. In landscapes much attention has been paid to light solutions. It often include sunset blink with unique color tone choice. J.Apinis born in modest teachers family. J.Apinis entered Latvian Academy of Art. He graduated Landscape painting workshop of Purvitis with diploma work "Evening". After graduating from academy, J.Apinis worked in Evangelical Lutheran High School as a teacher. In 1944 he migrated and was tragically killed in Hamburg. He participated in exhibitions from 1929, but from 1933 he was a member of the Association of Latvian Artists.
